Maja T.
Maja T. is a non-binary anti-fascist who spent over 600 days in solitary confinement in Budapest. Maja was 24 years old when Maja faced a potential prison sentence of up to 24 years during the trial.
The film features excerpts from the court hearings in Budapest as well as glimpses of the solidarity and support movements surrounding Maja. It traces the progression of the trial through September 2025 and examines its political and social dimensions. Central to the narrative is the context of an increasingly authoritarian political climate in Hungary, where the ultra-nationalist Fidesz government seeks to eliminate anti-fascism.
The trial against Maja T. (and others not present) lasted just under a year, spanning only seventeen court days in Budapest. The trial is considered highly controversial, in part because the extradition to queer-hostile Hungary in June 2024 was unlawful and there was little evidence that Maja T. was involved in the attacks on “Day of Honor” in Budapest in 2023. On February 4, 2026, Maja was sentenced to eight years in prison. Maja has appealed the verdict and remains in custody in Budapest pending the decision.
The film will be followed by an discussion about the film and its background.
