Framing Agnes
In the USA’s first gender clinic in the 1950s, interviews with transgender people were conducted and documented for research purposes.
Many decades later, these documents were rediscovered and formed the basis of the documentary film Framing Agnes, in which trans actors re-enact interviews with people from that time.
This gives viewers an insight into the realities faced by trans people who were forced to hide their identities and who often only knew of the existence of other trans people through negative portrayals on talk shows. At the same time, we can witness the early manifestations of trans solidarity and empowerment and how individuals circumvented oppressive systems to assert their right to self-determination.
Framing Agnes uses creative storytelling to connect the experiences of trans people today with those of over 70 years ago, incorporating current events, interviews, and archive material.
The project itself is made up of a trans cast and crew.
